Starting today, I’ll bring you a weekly dose of some of the most strange, funny, crazy and disorienting driving rules across the world. We’ll go across countries, cities and regions in order to find the most hectic, hilarious and insane driving guidelines you can think of. Maybe you’ll even put them to good use if you ever visit one of the places we’ll mention.
This week, we have India, the exotic land of colors, spices and cows. But India is also the land of chaotic traffic, that includes vehicles of all kinds, people, animals and possibly aliens, that doesn’t even have a set of unwritten rules. There are no rules. Yes, I guess you could call this freedom, but it turns out it’s not. So here are the basic 10 rules that you need to keep in mind if you ever go driving in India:
1. Do not assume that anyone cares about lanes.
2. Do not assume that anyone cares about traffic lights.
3. Just concentrate on what direction you want to go in and the other will adjust to whatever you’re doing.
4. Pedestrians are bound to appear anytime, anywhere. That also goes for cows, pigs, dogs and a range od different animals.
5. Road rules are just for the suicidal, so, for your own safety, don’t even think of following them.
6. People will either tell you to turn your headlights off during the day or you will be blinded by other cars’ ones at night. There is no in between.
7. It’s better not to drive at night. Even if you’re a daredevil and in search of an adrenaline rush, this could prove fatal, so it’s better to go bungee jumping or go swimming with the sharks.
8. Buses, carts and rickshaws will stop and go where and when they please. Do not be alarmed, since this is just typical behavior.
9. Truck drivers are the James Bonds of India and are licensed to kill. (from here)
10. Expect the unexpected.
With this in mind, we’d be glad if you would complete the list and if you gave us other tips about your local traffic. I’d love to do a map with strange, funny and silly driving rules all around the world.
