Gaming in 10 years’ time

Posted on February 8th, 2010 by Andra Zaharia

Since we’re on the subject, I’ve stumbled upon this great, comprehensive (and rather long) article about the future of the gaming industry. How the specialist see gaming in 10 years’ time, interviews and development insights, they’re all there. Here’s a sum-up of the article:

  • 2020 is seen as the “generational tipping point” of the gaming industry,  because by then, “it’s likely more people will have played games than have not”, as Rob Cooper, Managing Director of Ubisoft believes. Being a gamer will be more socially acceptable by then and this will broaden the market for gaming.
  • The gaming industry’s plans for the next 10 years are quite fantastic: motion (ex: Natal Project) and mind control, 3D MMOs, but also face and voice control. Games will surely become more a part of us that we can imagine right now. All this will build into mind-controlled environments, with which we’ll interact almost as we do with other people.
  • The new 3D MMO worlds will be infinitely malleable and ready to obey all the users’ commands. The new interest in 3D may bring technology into our homes that we’ve seen only in movies, but that are materializing with each passing day.
  • Now imagine the ultimate 3D gaming house. You could have not only a gaming room, but transform your house into a real playground. Augmented reality comes into play and will give us the possibility to experience things that only action heroes have. Imagine going on a mission side by side with your favourite game character. Not bad, right?
  • The next step: holograms. The gaming industry visionaries say that they’ll devise technologies capable of taking us to any kind of environment we can envision. The more we see, the more we’ll feel, the better the game will be.
  • More practical questions relate to cloud gaming (since cloud computing is the new frenzy), to the future of consoles and what will the main players on the market will do. Will Apple join the crowd? Will consoles disappear with the emergence of motion control? Many questions will be answered in the next decade.
